TRE
Tension and Trauma Release Exercises

I first began looking into Tension and Trauma Release Exercises in the midst of the pandemic. As a therapist, I was noticing that my clients, as well as myself, were needing more than just talking. Our bodies were feeling the impact of chronic stress and disconnection from ourselves and those we love.  I started to notice my own body's response to stress, how my body would hold on and then release. I began to do my own personal exploration and found TRE. I began practicing, learning, and went on my own journey with my own nervous system. After feeling grounded in the process, I decided to get certified and teach.

TRE is a series of 7 simple exercises that warm up and lightly fatigue our muscles in the legs and trunk. It works directly with our central nervous system to bring on our bodies natural stress release through neurogenic tremors.

So often, when experiencing a traumatic event, whether a one time event or ongoing, our body learns to take care of us in the shutdown or freeze response. This can continue after the traumatic experience has ended. For so many people, our body continues to think it is in danger and continues to protect us in this way. Our body continues to flood us with endorphins, and this keeps us from being really present in our lives. Many people report feeling stuck, numb, depressed or really tired. It's like our life energy isn't accessible.

This is where TRE comes in. It is about becoming more present with the body. It isn't about thinking or talking or figuring our way out of anything. It is about breathing and allowing the body to do what it already knows how to do through shaking. This process can enable people to feel more connected to themselves and people in their lives.

I offer one on one individual sessions, in person or through zoom. This is a practice that can be complementary to your own personal work in therapy. By offering the body an experience of presence as well as release, it can allow for increased physical and emotional self awareness and regulation.
